‘Urban Tetris’는 경쟁이 치열한 주변 환경에 대응하여 상업성을 개선하는 데 초점을 맞춘 리모델링 및 증축 프로젝트다. 부산의 중심 상권인 서면 한복판에 위치한 이 건물은 건물 전면에 배치된 지하 진입로를 통해 주변 복합 시설들 사이에서 시선을 사로잡는 시각적 요소(eye-catcher)를 제공한다. 하지만 노후화된 건물 상태로 인해 임대 선호도가 낮아 수익성 확보에 어려움이 있었다. 이를 해결하기 위해 건축주는 뒷골목의 인접 대지를 추가로 매입하여 두 필지 모두를 리모델링하고 연결할 것을 요청했다.
전면부에는 안경점이 배치되었으며, 후면의 두 매스는 근린생활시설로 활용된다. 건축적 접근 방식은 도시의 필지 전체를 마치 테리스 블록처럼 개념화하는 것이었다. 증축된 매스는 유사한 공간적 이데올로기를 채택하여 처음에는 분리된 듯 보이나, 도시 구성의 추가적인 요소로서 점차 하나의 전체로 통합된다. 기존 건물과 신축된 건물 사이의 공간은 다양한 프로그램적 기능을 통해 역동적으로 재구성되었다. 결과적으로 이 프로젝트는 용적률 게임으로만 치닫는 한국 도시 개발의 고정관념에 반하여, 새로운 도시적 유형을 구축하려는 시도를 담고 있다.

The 'Urban Tetris' is a remodeling and extension project that tackles the challenge of improving commerciality against the competitive neighborhood. Located at the heart of the business district Seomyeon, Busan, the building promotes an eye-catcher to the surrounding complex with an underground entrance located in front of the building. Regardless, due to deteriorating building conditions, lack of preference for lease seemed to punch struggles in rentability. Hoping for a better resolution, the owner purchased the adjacent lot at the back alley and requested to remodel both.
Allocated at the front, is the optician store whilst the two mass behind shall provide for neighborhood living facilities. The approach conceptualized overall city lots as blocks of such in Tetris. The extended mass, adopting similar spatial ideology, were initially segregated which later integrated as a single whole as additional elements to the urban composition. The space in between the old and new was dynamically rebuilt through various engagements of programmatic functions. As a result, the attempt imposed the establishment of a new urban typology that counteract the stereotype of Korea's urban development which, by marked through a volume-rate game.
