KIST Meditation Pavilion is a transformative architecture that interprets a strategic exploration of materiality. Sculpted as a commemoration of the 50th anniversary of KIST (Korea Institute of Science and Technology), the project attempts to tackle the challenge of constructing the building with only a single material that accentuates the very philosophy of innovation in science and technology. Structured at 3.65cm long by 3.65cm wide by 3.65cm high were four 8cm thick UHPC panels with 853 inscriptions of the most influential scientific inventors’ names. The panels were effectively customed and designed, given the easy workability of UHPC as material. The essential study of architectural engineering upon how the panels could support themselves despite the perforations from the carved letters becomes the key to realize the intended approach.
