KIST Meditation Pavilion is a transformative architecture that interprets a strategic exploration of materiality. Sculpted as a commemoration of the 50th anniversary of KIST (Korea Institute of Science and Technology), the project attempts to tackle the challenge of constructing the building with only a single material that accentuates the very philosophy of innovation in science and technology. Structured at 3.65cm long by 3.65cm wide by 3.65cm high were four 8cm thick UHPC panels with 853 inscriptions of the most influential scientific inventors’ names. The panels were effectively customed and designed, given the easy workability of UHPC as material. The essential study of architectural engineering upon how the panels could support themselves despite the perforations from the carved letters becomes the key to realize the intended approach.

2 – “I do not know what I may appear to the world, but to myself, I seem to have been only like a boy playing on the seashore, and diverting myself in now and then finding a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me.” – Isaac Newton
3 – “I am enough of an artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.” – Albert Einstein
4 – “Look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see, and wonder about what makes the universe exist. Be curious.” –Stephen Hawking
5 – “Nothing is more active than thought, for it travels over the universe, and nothing is stronger than a necessity for all must submit to it.” –Thales
6 – “Eureka!” – Archimedes
