[KIST 명상 파빌리온]

KIST Meditation Pavilion은 물질성에 대한 전략적 탐구를 해석하는 것에서부터 시작했다. 한국과학기술연구원(KIST) 창립 50주년을 기념하여 만들어진 이 프로젝트는 과학기술 혁신의 철학을 강조하는 단일 재료로 건물을 짓는다는 도전적인 과제를 시도했다. 길이 3.65cm, 너비 3.65cm, 높이 3.65cm의 구조에 가장 영향력 있는 과학 발명가의 이름 853개가 새겨진 8cm 두께의 UHPC 패널 4개가 설치되어 있다. 패널은 UPC의 손쉬운 작업성을 고려하여 효과적으로 맞춤 제작 및 설계되었다. 조각된 글자의 구멍에도 불구하고 패널이 어떻게 스스로를 지탱할 수 있는지에 대한 건축 공학의 필수적인 연구가 의도한 접근 방식을 실현하는 열쇠가 되었다.

The KIST Meditation Pavilion began with an interpretation of a strategic exploration of materiality. Created to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), this project undertook the challenging task of constructing a building using a single material, in order to emphasize the philosophy of scientific and technological innovation.

The structure consists of four UPC panels, each 8 cm thick, engraved with the names of 853 of the most influential scientific inventors. Each letter measures 3.65 cm in length, width, and height. The panels were effectively customized and designed in consideration of UHPC’s ease of fabrication.

A critical study in architectural engineering—investigating how the panels could support themselves despite the perforations created by the carved letters—became the key to realizing the intended design approach.
